The main components of the electric arc furnace include the furnace body, large current system, electrode lifting mechanism, furnace lid lifting and rotating mechanism, tilting furnace mechanism, water cooling system, hydraulic system, high-voltage system, furnace transformer, low-voltage system and automatic control system.

The electric arc furnace is charged from top after opening its furnace cover by rotating.
- It can be divided into DC electric arc furnaces and AC electric arc furnaces according to the nature of the power supply used. DC arc furnaces generally offer stability and high efficiency. The AC electric arc furnace has lower cost, simple structure and is more widely used.
- It can be divided into general power, high power and ultra-high power electric arc furnaces according to the different output power of the transformer.
- It can be divided into alkaline lining EAF and acidic lining EAF according to the properties of the lining material.
- It can be divided into top-charging furnaces and horizontal continuous side-feeding furnaces according to different charging methods. The top-charging furnace is a form of adding scrap steel directly after rotating the furnace cover; the horizontal continuous side-feeding is suitable for large-scale EAF and continuous feeding and melting. It can effectively shorten the smelting cycle, reduce power consumption and increase output.
- It can be divided into eccentric bottom tapping (EBT) and spout tapping according to different tapping forms.

- The charge can be melted quickly in a short time with the high temperature of the arc, thereby the melting cycle can be shortened and production efficiency can be improved.
- The temperature can be easily controlled and adjusted, which can meet the requirements of smelting different steel grades.
- The atmosphere inside the furnace can be controlled. It can create both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Therefore, it has strong deoxidation ability and can remove harmful phosphorus and sulfur.
- Flexible raw materials. Whether it is pig iron, scrap steel or other alloy materials, process parameters can be adjusted to adapt to different smelting needs.
- Economic space occupation.
